Abstract

The interconnection between Industry 4.0 technologies and sustainability performance has received growing attention in recent research. This study investigates the impact of Industry 4.0 technologies on the competitive performance of firms and the role of sustainable orientation. Based on survey data collected from 157 firms operating in Australia and analysed using the PLS-SEM method, the findings provide empirical evidence for direct positive effects of Industry 4.0 technologies on competitive performance, and this relationship is moderated by the firm's strategic orientation toward sustainability. This study contributes to the Industry 4.0 literature by integrating strategic management and sustainability perspectives. The practical implications suggest that firms with a strong sustainability orientation are better positioned to achieve competitive performance from their technology investments.
