Abstract
![CDATA[Bipolar disorder is associated with two phases: mania (or hypomania) and depression. While bipolar disorder I is associated with mania, bipolar disorder II is associated with hypomania, which is a mild form of mania. In this chapter, we discuss topics related to the nature of depression in bipolar I and II disorder. Here, we review studies showing that unlike mania, depression in bipolar disorder is associated with worse occupational functioning. Further, in this chapter, we also discuss studies comparing the similarities and differences between both unipolar and bipolar depression. We also discuss how depression in bipolar disorder is closely associated with co-morbid psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and eating disorders. We will further discuss treatment plans for depression in bipolar I and II disorder, in comparison to unipolar depression.]]
