The NWICO debates revisited: A contraflow from the Arab world?

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This paper aims at engaging with debates on the globalisation of news and international news flows in relation to Arab media. These debates will stem from the MacBride Report published by UNESCO 'Many Voices One World', and relate it to Arab media's position in contemporary global media debates. One of the issues raised by the report focuses on unbalanced news flows from the developed world to developing countries. This has been particularly evident in the Arab world where there have been various foreign media broadcasting into the Middle East without any Arab media broadcasting directly to the Western world. This paper looks further into these debates highlighting that Al Jazeera English (AJE), which began broadcasting in November 2006, could perhaps act as a contra-flow from the Arab world.
