N2 - The study sought to trace the supply chain of fresh fruit and vegetables from its agricultural origins to its buyer destinations. Knowing the journeys of fresh fruit and vegetables, and the key role of Sydney Markets Limited in these journeys, is important for a number of reasons. These are expressed in the objectives of this study: 1. To improve wider understanding of the role played by Sydney Markets in the supply of fresh fruit and vegetables to Sydney's urban communities and beyond. 2. To better identify the origins of fresh fruit and vegetables by specific categories. 3. To ascertain the nature and extent of diversity and concentration in Sydney's fresh fruit and vegetable supply chain. 4. To provide a basic understanding of the distances involved in the transportation of Sydney's fresh fruit and vegetables in the context of rising freight costs, including congestion costs, and of concerns for the sustainability of long-distance food supply chains.
