Abstract

The Painted Desert is a release by Black Box White Cube (Dr Greg Hughes) that launches a portfolio exploring place-based production through the lens of Planetary Health and the Symbiocene. The work aims for an environmental grief response through planet-centred rather than human-centered design by giving way to the landscape and its direct impact on reproduction. The track creates an immersive audio experience from the artist's journey through Antakirinja Country and The Painted Desert, featuring a guitar damaged by extreme heat during the crossing. Field recordings and samples blend with the heat-warped guitar to relay the landscape's fragile yet extreme qualities. This approach"”the generative trace of the environment on a medium"”will inform future work exploring the mangroves of Kooragang Island in Worimi and Awabakal Country.
