N2 - In many developed countries today, a recovery orientation is the mental health policy ethos from hospitals through to the community (Australian Government, 2010). Two of the criticisms consumers often make about mental health inpatient wards are boredom and a sense of isolation. To address this, most mental health settings offer structured activity and group programs. These could constitute the beginnings of social, practical, and psychological building blocks for recovery. In this column we aim to re-engage with issues relating to activities in the daily lives of people who live with a long-term mental illness. Specifically, we ask three questions: (1) What types of meaningful activities do service users consider relevant? (2) How is diversity of interest and need catered to? (3) Do meaningful activities form a continuum that for some consumers will result in employment?
