    Abstract

A single blinded prospective randomised study of thirty participants with pain of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) on presentation, and no previous intervention with foot orthoses, was undertaken. This study assessed the reliability and validity of the goniometer when used to measure the first MTPJ in stance. Results revealed the goniometer (tractograph) to be a reliable and valid instrument when used to measure the first MTPJ in stance (r=0.88; p<0.01, SEM=5) by the same examiner on the same patient.
