    Abstract

Editorial: There is little if any argument against encouraging people into active lifestyles. The wealth of evidence available clearly shows the health benefits afforded by participating in a range of forms of physical activity. Whilst the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport covers all forms of physical activity, I would like to focus this editorial on sport per se; that is, a specific type of leisure time physical activity that is most usually governed by a set of rules of customs and is characteristically competitive.
