Abstract

The research presented in this report focused on gaining understanding of the role of statutory planning in achieving sustainable development in Australian cities. Based on an analysis of policy documents, legal texts, practice guidance and development assessment processes, the research identified the main challenges for the planning system to support an urban sustainability transition today and in the near future. The geographical focus of this research was on four Australian states and their capital city regions, namely Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.
