Abstract

Published in Our Heritage, The Ocean: Against the Flow: The Samoan Observer Tusitala Short Stories. First paragraph: A spherical light creeps onto the stage and engulfs the impenetrable darkness. The murmur in the crowd fades as a curvy silhouette becomes visible. A couple of loud roars and several cheers break through from the audience. Despite the glorious noise, the ballerina’s heart fails to race. She was often told that she was born to dance. Dancing used to fill her with joy and make her feel free. But now she isn’t allowed to be free.
