Abstract
Let me begin by considering two exhibits: the book Luang Prabang: an architectural journey, published by Les Ateliers de la Peninsule in 2004 and the gold bas-relief sculpture that adorns the entrance wall of Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham. These exhibits stand as metaphors for the ways I want to explore particular dimensions of the heritage experienced by Western travellers to Luang Prabang, the World Heritage city, formally the royal capital of Laos, that sits astride a narrow peninsula between the mighty Mekong River on one side and the Nam Khan River on the other.
