Abstract

![CDATA[The National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families concluded that, over the period 1910-1970, between one in three and one in ten children were forcibly removed from their families and communities and that, in some places and at some times, the proportion was much higher. The inquiry further concluded that ‘not one Indigenous family escaped the effects of forcible removal’, with many affected over a number of generations. Why and how did the Australian authorities take this extreme action, and what were the outcomes? In the chapter we consider these questions, drawing extensively on the findings of the National Inquiry, known as Bringing Them Home.]]
