Abstract
In a world that is challenged by climate change there will be increasing demands for sustainability at the local level. This paper presents a model that suggests a way for rural communities to face the challenges of the 21st Century related to water, energy, waste management, access to materials and food security. The technology already exists for the sustainable village to be developed. The emphasis has to be on a holistic approach to the application of this technology to maximise the benefits. There is a need to ensure that the sustainable village operates in a free market global economy, to secure the sustainability of its economic base.
