Abstract

![CDATA[We are mindful that the body has come into much sharper focus in terms of sociological theorising over the last twenty years. Surprisingly, this kind of theorising within the field of HPE is relatively recent (see Evans et al. 2004). Our explicit aim is to link the body (and the multiple discourses that surround it) with literacy in a way that allows teachers to utilise designs of meaning in HPE that embrace the mind and body. We suggest that students should be provided with opportunities to experience the known and the new; conceptualise by identifying and theorising; analyse functionally and critically; and apply appropriately and creatively (Kalamzis & Cope 2005a). The following section provides some practical examples of the multiliteracies design areas within HPE, followed by the theoretical underpinnings of the ways we make meaning of and through the body.]]
