Abstract
The medicinal cannabis market has been estimated at $250 billion globally1, while in Australia the latent demand has been estimated at $100 million2. Growth rates in the U.S. of 22% from 2015 to 2016, where the value of the industry has already reached over $5 billion,3 suggest that the Australian industry could reach a substantial size with some sources suggesting $50 billion by 2018.4 With an increasing number of countries and States legalising medicinal cannabis and with major medical companies yet to monopolize the industry, there is a window of opportunity for start-up companies to profit from innovative products, technologies and plant strains.
