Abstract

Therapeutic recreation is an emerging profession in Australia. The terminology used in Australia has more commonly been diversional therapy. However, therapeutic recreation and diversional therapy are now being used in differing contexts, with therapeutic recreation evolving from diversional therapy. This article overviews briefly the history of therapeutic recreation, clientele and settings, professional associations, higher education, and future challenges.
