Abstract

![CDATA[Therapeutic recreation in Australia is a developing profession; therapeutic approaches of recreation to healthcare in particular mental health are still developing in a risk aware, medicalised model of care (Pegg & Lord, 2008). This session will outline the University of Wollongong’s therapeutic recreation intervention ‘Recovery Camp’. This experiential recreation approach is developing innovative treatment options for consumers in Australia further assisting these consumers on their recovery journey (Moxham, Liersch-Sumskis, Taylor, Patterson, & Brighton, 2015). This session aims to highlight the importance of psychological needs focused recreation and its benefits on both motivation and outcomes of therapeutic recreation practice. Highlighting recovery camp as a flagship in the area of needs focused recreation, resilience and recovery. Emphasizing therapeutic recreation as an essential part of the mental health treatment landscape in Australia and further abroad.]]
