    Abstract

Fatigue tests were carried out on welded thin-walled Channel-Channel cross-beams. Cyclic bending load was applied to the bottom member. Constant stress amplitude loading was applied to the specimens resulting in crack initiation and propagation leading to failure of the specimens. Stress concentrations in the Channel-Channel cross-beams were measured using strip strain gauges at weld toes. The study relates the stress concentrations measured using strip strain gauges to the crack patterns observed during the fatigue tests. The Channel-Channel cross-beam fatigue test data is compared to fatigue rest data obtained from previous research on RHS-RHS, RHS-Angle and RHS-Channel cross-beams. Using the deterministic method, an existing fatigue design curve from the Australian Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Stroctures AS4600 is recommended for the design of Channe!-Channel cross-beams under bending.
