Abstract
The Japanese word for ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“designââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢, madori, carries connotations regarding space and form that differ markedly from Western suppositions. An analysis of the word and its cognates reveals another way of thinking about architecture, one that calls in question some of our basic assumptions.
