    Abstract

Renacer 1.2.3.4.5. was a former maintenance camp of the Chilean Air Force, and later a local headquarters of Pinochet's state security forces, the DNI, situated in the Quinta Normal district of Santiago. We consider a memorial erected in 2007 on this site of twenty-two people whose deaths were by implication connected with Pinochet's forces. Less than two years later, the memorial was overturned and lying in the dust. We discuss the reasons for this apparent outrage, including disagreements among the residents of the precinct about the role of the Left during the Pinochet oppression.
