Abstract
![CDATA[This chapter introduces clinical reasoning and the process of thoughtful, person centred care. It explains the types of thinking skills that enable the nurse or midwife to assess a person’s situation and condition, analyse the data collected, prioritise the person’s needs, decide on the appropriate interventions, and evaluate the outcomes of the care delivered. This chapter should be read in conjunction with the other chapters in Unit 3 so that the relationships between the components of practice are understood. Many of these concepts overlap and cannot properly be considered as separate entities because the interrelationships between such aspects as reflection and critical thinking are very strong. Each of the chapters in Unit 3 explains the processes of care through a more detailed discussion of assessing, identifying health problems, planning care, implementing care, and evaluating care. Critical thinking activities and reflective cues are used throughout this chapter and throughout this text.]]
