Abstract

This document reports on a study of respondents across Western Australia (WA), Victoria, and New South Wales (NSW), from outlet types that are typical tobacco retailers, and where the power to decide whether to sell tobacco or not is likely to rest with the owner/manager of the outlet. The sample comprised convenience stores (with the exception of the large 7-Eleven chain), grocery stores, newsagents, accommodation outlets, and for WA and Victoria, alcohol-licensed premises such as bars, hotels, and clubs. Of the 4,527 potential tobacco retailers who we made contact with, 3,279 (72.4%) participation in the survey, which after exclusion of 24 outlets where the selling status could not be determined and 327 outlets that were deemed to be business types that were not typical tobacco retailers (e.g. pharmacies), resulted in a sample of 2,923 current, former and 'never-sellers', including 626 in WA, 1379 in Victoria, and 923 in NSW.
