Abstract
Tough Guy expresses prosocial aesthetics and stylistic heterogeneity through a female vocal line and a string section. Rhythmic “chugging” power chords, a melodic refrain evoking an Irish jig, a blues riff, and an instrumental middle section whose contrapuntal structure echoes a Baroque fugue, are unified through a coherent compositional approach. Drawing on the shared spirit of rebellion found in both Australian pub rock and Chinese street opera, with lyrics translated into Mandarin by Chuqiao Sun, the narrative rebels against aggression in music, relationships, and contemporary culture. Recorded in February 2020 by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Martyn Ford and featuring the vocals of Fifi Rong—and released in April 2021—Tough Guy continues to reach a global audience, demonstrating the cultural resonance of the prosocial narrative and stylistic diversity.
