Abstract

The rapid rise of productized construction projects (PCPs) since 2015 has demonstrated unprecedented productivity gains in managing quality, technology and digitalization in construction industry. Systems integration, which refers to iterative process of combining and coordinating system components into the unified configurations, introduced new prospects and challenges to PCPs, yet a comprehensive review of its current state and future trends is lacking. Following a systematic review process, the findings indicate systems integration encompasses 14 thematic clusters. It demonstrate a temporal transition from BIM-driven management (2004-2012) to sustainability-oriented construction systems (2019-2024). The findings also contribute to project management literature by conceptualising systems integration as critical project capabilities with regard to: (1) design integration capability, (2) risk governance capability (3) physical interface integration capability (4) organizational integration capability and (5) sustainability integration capability, extending beyond a purely technical function to a governance mechanism for coordinating complex, interdependent systems across PCPs lifecycle. In addition, the findings discuss the tensions associated with trade-offs between standardization and flexibility, logistics risks, and sustainability. Finally, a synergistic framework for achieving systems integration in the era of PCPs is developed.
