    Abstract

The twentieth century has been referred to as ‘the century of the participating child’. While the current understanding of the concept of child participation can be traced historically to ideas articulated in the areas of education, community development and human rights, it is predominantly in the theory and practice of education that we find examples of adults advocating children’s participation.
