Abstract

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) encompasses health practices, knowledge, and beliefs regarding the treatment, prevention, and diagnosis of illness, and the maintenance of health and well-being. TCM focuses on healing through a range of approaches including herbal medicine, manual therapies and techniques such as acupuncture, or mind–body and lifestyle approaches such as Tai Chi. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a heterogeneous syndrome characterized by a decline in memory and thinking ability on the background of relatively intact activities of daily living. MCI significantly increases dementia risk, and currently there are no approved therapies that improve cognitive function, reduce dementia risk, or delay dementia diagnosis. TCM has been used to support longevity, boost memory and thinking, and manage age-related brain disorders for thousands of years, and may contain viable secondary prevention strategies that are urgently required for people with MCI.
