Abstract

Editorial: Participation in sport provides us with enjoyment, satisfaction, motivation, fitness, health, social interaction, and variety of other intrinsic and extrinsic benefits. For many people, watching sport is equally as important and provides mechanisms for social cohesion, development of affiliation and pride, and a sense of “being part of a team”. Whilst far too often we witness the ugly side of sport through violence among players and fans, it is on rare occasions that we see genuine tragedy that has a broad impact on individuals, their families and fellow participants, and, on occasion, the national and international sporting community.
