    Abstract

![CDATA[This paper explores ways of rethinking the translations of national competency standards programs and the linkages between neoliberal reforms in vocational education and training [VET], public services and training/learning practices in organisations. Using the governmentality perspective of neo-Foucauldians, it presents a useful way of analysing these translations and linkages and provides new understandings of the neoliberal reforms and ways in which workers are governed at a distance through assemblages of governmental strategies. It explores the failure of attempts to introduce competency standards in a particular site - child protection work - and the challenges and resistances provided by alternative authorities, in this case, the 'professions'.]]
