    Abstract

It is estimated that about 3.5 billion people will be suffering from water scarcity by 2025. To exacerbate the problem, human intervention has increased water pollution, significantly reducing readily accessible potable water resources. The World Health Organisation estimates that water-borne diseases are the principal causes of about 1.8 million deaths (around the globe) every year. An effective water treatment system that is portable, easy to install and use, and that attracts low operation and maintenance cost has the potential to improve this undesirable situation. This paper describes one such system, the LazurTM that uses Ultraviolet radiation and Ultrasonics to treat and disinfect water. The test results suggest that the LazurTM system is capable of providing potable water at relatively low cost.
