Abstract
The things we encounter in our travels often have a certain vividness, much of which no doubt stems from our abnormal circumstances" being in a strange place, in a different time zone, encountering strange people. But these encounters often stay with us. They have an unfinished quality, which is something that may be true in a particular way for academic travellers: we periodically rehearse these encounters, finding new meaning in them in the context of new projects we undertake. We are never quite done with our travels and this has certainly been true of my 1994 experience on the slopes of Gunung Agung.
