Abstract

In June 2020, Advance Diversity Services (ADS) approached the University of Wollongong (UOW) with a particular community-based research need. ADS, a local non-profit, multicultural migrant resource organisation, provides crucial support services such as migrant settlement, aged care, disability support and mental health to culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities in the Hurtsville, Kogarah, Rockdale and Sutherland Shire Local Government Areas (LGA). In the context of global pandemic, ADS like other community organisations, observes that the vulnerability of queer communities, particularly CALD queer communities has deepened and would like to extend their community outreach and mainstream services to queer individuals in their LGAs. However, ADS recognised that in order to do so, they would first need to understand their diversity service workers’ attitudes, knowledge and skills on servicing queer communities. The conceptualisation of this community engagement project was based on this research need identified by ADS.Through a range of data collection methods, the project set out to investigate: a. diversity service workers’ attitudes and concerns towards ADS’s plan to provide support services to CALD queer communities; b. diversity workers’ knowledge and skills gap in delivering community outreach initiatives and services to CALD queer communities.
