Abstract

![CDATA[Sustainable development is one of the hot topics in many fields. Accordingly, United Nations (UN) published seventeen goals for sustainable development (SDG) focusing on poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. The contribution of the building sector to achieve these goals, such as ‘SDG6 clean water and sanitation’ and ‘SDG7 Affordable clean energy’ are significant. In order to achieve the set targets by 2030, there is a clear need for the building sector to re-shape its practices. Therefore, this research study aims to develop a scoring model for the building sector to identify the baseline conditions required to achieve the sustainable development goals. Initially, this research study carried out an in-depth evaluation of the seventeen goals to identify the goals that require a contribution from the building sector. Afterwards, parameters were identified focusing on the leadership and energy in environmental design (LEED) version3 green building rating tool. Finally, a scoring system was developed to assess the newly constructed buildings in achievig the given goals. There are certain sustainable goals such ‘SDG1 No poverty’, ‘SDG2 Zero hunger’, SDG3 Good health and wellbeing’, ‘SDG4 Quality education’, ‘SDG5 Gender equality’, ‘SDG14 Life below water’, ‘SDG16 Peace, justice and strong institution’ and ‘SDG17 Partnerships for the goals’ that do not have an impact on the building construction. However, there are certain goals with direct impact. Finally, considering all the impacts a comprehensive contribution to development (CCDI) was established as a baseline to evaluate the buildings.]]
