Abstract
In current years, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) have gained tremendous interest in research because of their unique characteristics such as encapsulation of drug in their core, targeted drug delivery and their protection from gastrointestinal environment and first pass metabolism of various potential bioactive drugs including proteins, peptides and phytochemicals. The present review discusses the historical background and transformation taken place in the nanotechnology that led to the development of SLNs. Further, the study entailed about the composition, various ingredients and techniques that are used to fabricate SLNs along with their mechanism and advantages. Highlighted are the biopharmaceutical aspects and bottle necks associated to clinical translation of SLNs for improving the bioavailability, stability, and solubility of various lipophilic and gastrointestinal labile drugs that are used for treating many chronic diseases.
