Abstract
Compared to other life forms, human beings-or at least those who come from European-derived cultures-tend to believe that they are, or become, human as they transcend some animal-like condition. As Simon Glendinning has put it (in the same universalist terminology of the philosophical humanism he criticises): 'Man is only man insofar as he is essentially more than a human animal.'
