    Abstract

Introduction: Self-assessment and reflection have been demonstrated as strategies which can focus learning and lead to a higher standard of clinical competency. At the University of Western Sydney, preparation for clinical fieldwork requires students to be competent in a series of practical skills including manual handling. Traditionally students have been provided in-class opportunities to practise skill development but have not received structured individual feedback on their performance. University-supplied iPads now enable students to record and appraise their performance in preparation for formative assessment congruent to the demands from the field.
