Abstract
![CDATA[This case study examines some of the practical and unanticipated lessons derived from the author’s doctoral research fieldwork. Based on an evaluation of Needle and Syringe Programs in Western Sydney, the case study outlines some methodological considerations that are not usually covered by standard methodological accounts and texts. Explored will be issues such as utilizing service staff to assist with recruitment, challenges applying theoretical frameworks to the analysis process, the co-constitutive elements of the interview process, and the therapeutic dimensions that can sometimes emerge in the encounter between researcher and participant. The case invites readers to reflect on the complex and “messy” ontology of social reality, and how this must be responded to and accounted for in our methodological engagements.]]
