Utilitarianism for the dog who has everything

    Abstract

The dedication shown towards many dogs in affluent countries raises important ethical questions. Do dog owners act with moral integrity when they lavish benefits upon their dog? Or, do some acts of generosity towards dogs actually compromise the dog owner ethically, because finite resources are directed away from more pressing matters such as global poverty, and towards dogs – an animal whose needs can be satisfied reasonably simply?
