Abstract
Chilean novelist Roberto Bolano's identification of four categories of evil, namely those of the dictator, the administrator, the sociopath and the accomplice in the context of state-sponsored crime, in his novels such as 'By Night in Chile' and 'Distant Star' is discussed. His novels' function in enabling an understanding of evil as a natural phenomenon, which is made of interdependent but distinct types, is highlighted.
