Abstract
Contemporary en plein air landscape painting continues to play a vital role in how artists engage with and represent the natural world, emphasizing direct, immersive interaction with the environment. This practice fosters a deep personal connection to place, where the act of painting outdoors becomes both a creative and contemplative experience. Unlike fleeting or idealized depictions, en plein air work often reflects the artist’s evolving relationship with the landscape, shaped by changes in light, weather, and seasonal cycles. The creation of multiple works overtime allows for sustained observation, encouraging nuanced responses and the development of more complex, layered compositions.
The artwork Watersheds, 32 Views contributes to contemporary en plein air landscape painting by demonstrating the value of sustained, long-term engagement with place through a series of field-based observations. Comprising 32 individual wood panel paintings created over three years, the work brings together multiple perspectives and temporal moments to form a cohesive, large-scale representation of swamps, rivers, creeks, and watersheds. This extended process allows for a deeper exploration of the ephemeral qualities of water and light, as well as the subtle changes in the natural environment over time. Through its scale, structure, and commitment to repeated site visits, the work highlights how landscape painting can serve as both an aesthetic and ecological record, offering a layered, immersive understanding of place.
This research is significant in its demonstration of how sustained en plein air practice can deepen artistic engagement with the environment and contribute to contemporary landscape painting. Watersheds, 32 Views exemplifies how long-term, repeated observation can reveal the ephemeral and evolving character of natural sites such as swamps, rivers, creeks, and watersheds. By bringing together 32 individually painted panels created over three years, the work highlights the value of time, presence, and cumulative experience in capturing the complexity of place. This approach not only enriches the visual language of landscape painting but also affirms its relevance as a method of environmental reflection, personal connection, and ecological awareness.
