Abstract
![CDATA[Much of the work on Joyce and Vico focuses on cycles of history in Finnegans Wake but, since Joyce was familiar with Viconian principles from at least 1913 it is also possible that earlier works were influenced by his thought; certainly that appears to be the case in Ulysses. Many aspects of Viconian thought are of interest, not the least Vico’s analysis of Homer. That Vico was a teacher of rhetoric is likely to have excited Joyce’s attention in an episode governed by this art in the Linatti schema. For the purposes of this examination of “Aelous” however I focus on certain concepts outlined in Vico’s The new science.]]
