Abstract
Our framework for understanding the factors that shape faculty engagement behavior is guided by both organizational and psychological perspectives. Previous research would suggest that individual and organizational elements combine to determine faculty-engaged scholarship. This is not to say that organizations drive individual behavior, but rather that faculty members’ personal values play out differently depending to some extent on the organizational environment. In other words, organizations influence how faculty values about service are enacted. In particular, this study is informed by the concept of organizational culture. Our review of the literature reveals a common sentiment about the faculty reward structure as a barrier to engagement in community. Implicit in this critique is an acknowledgement of the organizational forces at play in shaping faculty behavior. Organizational culture (whether it is the disciplinary culture or the institutional culture) shapes the ways in which faculty are socialized and influences their behaviors and existing tendencies, including their commitment to service.
