Abstract

Each year the What Matters? Competition, run by the Whitlam Institute asks the question to students in years 5 to 12 across NSW and the ACT: "Tell us what matters to you in 400-600 words?" The competition is inspired by former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam's determination to involve the people of Australia in shaping the nation's future. Television viewers were given a unique insight into the hopes and aspirations of Australia's youth in the special screening of the 'What Matters?' competition, with a special program on the competition aired on Television Sydney, digital channel 44. The half hour program included the eight 2011 finalists chosen from a field of over 1,800 entries, and the awards ceremony attended by Mrs Margaret Whitlam AO and SBS Dateline co-presenter Yalda Hakim. Produced, directed and written by Rachel Bentley.
