    Abstract

In this chapter, we have tried to present a snapshot of what as least some of the research can tell us. Hattie’s (2009) work makes a phenomenal contribution to the education literature in that we now know which factors are most likely to influence achievement and importantly, which ones have the greatest impact. Similarly, Rowe’s (2003) findings indicate that it is excellent teachers who most influence desirable educational outcomes. While these findings have not been validated with Indigenous students specifically, they provide us with the benchmarks for excellence – very clearly, excellence is what we need to attain in Indigenous education. We advocate that we need to take the very best available theory, research and practice and apply it to the teaching of Indigenous students.
