    Abstract

In this chapter the aim is twofold: to reckon with the present paradigms of “globalization” and “technologization” that pose novel problems of magnitude for democracy, and to delineate the crux of the historical-political problems that obtain under these paradigms. Schmidt asks: Can democracy today adapt its power and escape its totalizing tendencies such that the singularity of the individual is recovered and meaningfully sustained?
