    Abstract

Iodine is a trace element and is responsible for the synthesis of thyroid hormones that are critical for brain development especially in the foetal and early childhood development1. Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) as a result of insufficient supply of iodine is considered the most common single cause of preventable brain damage in the world today. Fortunately, with the implementation of effective universal salt iodisation (USI) programme, IDD can be prevented.
