Abstract
For historians of early New South Wales the lives of convicts lie like the scattered dots of a puzzle. Fragments from legal archives and a name on a list become clues. A clue invites a question, and the answer provokes another question, and gradually from the fragments emerge shadowy figures. What follows is an attempt to piece together the fragments of the life of one emancipated convict in New South Wales.
