Wind-induced vibration of tall buildings and its control by tuned mass dampers

Abstract

Wind tunnel model tests and theoretical analyses are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of tuned mass dampers in suppressing wind-induced tall building motion. A parametric study is conducted using excitation spectra directly measured from wind tunnel model tests. These tests clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of TMD systems in suppressing the dynamic response of the building. The TMD system is more effective In reducing the vibrations caused by lock-in excitation than those caused by cross-wind wake excitation or along-wind turbulence.
