Abstract

The performance of various active tuned mass dampers (ATMD) is compared with that of a passive tuned mass damper (PTMD) by assessing their effectiveness in suppressing wind-induced building vibrations. Five damper configurations with varying parameters were tested. The PTMD chosen for the comparison was tuned to give it a displacement ratio of 2.5. The comparison established that the ATMD operated in a far more effective manner than the PTMD. The superior vibration control was due to the differences in operating principles between the two systems.
