Abstract
![CDATA[A range of issues is explored concerning the relationship between work and family. It is argued that there have been various pressures for change in the work/family arena including changing demographics, social pressure and legislation. The question of who should take responsibility for the development, implementation and maintenance of family friendly work practices is discussed. It is argued that the government, employers and unions have a vital role to play in assisting employees balance their work and family demands. A review of the work and family literature in the following section suggests that researchers in several disciplines have been studying the issue from a number of contrasting points of view including the social-psychological approach, sociological approach and the cross-cultural/international approach. These perspectives have tended to analyse the issue from only their own viewpoint, giving limited and sometimes contrasting outcomes. Finally, implications for future research are considered with an account of the writer's proposed study regarding family friendly work practices in Australian organisations.]]
