Abstract
The following chapter examines the role of the police service with particular reference to the communities in which they serve. lt asks such questions as 'Who are the police?', 'What do the police do?', as well as examining the differences between 'the police' and 'policing'. Also discussed are the implications these questions have for working with the community.
